The Village

Tristan heard his name through the haze. At least that’s what it sounded like, his name. Yeah, it was his name because he heard someone say it again. The voice speaking sounded familiar but the words sounded distorted, mangled.

He tried to force his eyes open.

“Tristan,” the voice said again.

The process of getting his eyes open took longer than it should have, which made him wonder exactly how long he was out of it. When he managed to pry them open, his head rocked from one side to the other.

“Tristan, you must relax.”

“His mind is very strong.” A male voice echoed around him though he saw no one.

Tristan tried to block the voices and fought to push the fog from his vision. Slowly the office began to come into view again. The bare walls seemed to surround him like a cage. His gaze shot to the large desk, then to the familiar face that sat behind it. Just as their eyes met his breaths increased and his heart began to race. Something was...

“Relax son,” Vivian said again.

Son, Tristan grasped onto that one word and calmed his breathing.

“Good,” Vivian said in a soothing tone, “There are a few things I must tell you before you begin. Do you understand me, are my words clear?”

With his vision once again perfect, Tristan sat up in the chair and nodded as he looked around the room where only he and Vivian sat. Hadn’t he heard a male’s voice?

“Good, it sometimes takes a while to get your bearings. With you fighting Demetri’s pull, which no one has ever been able to do, he had to use more power.” She shook her head and smiled. “Well anyway, let’s begin. Maatii means to act as one. You and three others who have been brought here must navigate a number of obstacles to reach three orbs. Each of you must lay a hand on the orb in each challenge at the same time,” Vivian explained. “Once each of you has touched the orb, that challenge will end and the next will begin. Your team will have six days to complete the Maatii. You can be injured in the Maatii. Your brain will react as if you were actually injured, which means the pain is real. Any of you can also die, though this death is not a physical death, it will end the challenge and you and your team will fail the Maatii.” She waited for his response to see if he understood.

Not trusting his voice yet he nodded again.

“The Maatii is a challenge of strength, resolve, and intellect. As your sponsor, I am allowed to give you one piece of advice.” Vivian looked at him but said nothing for a long time. “My advice to you is that you need to use the strongest weapon you have. To find the orbs, follow the light.” With that she disappeared and he was left alone.

“Strongest weapon?”

Shaking his head, Tristan rose to his feet and walked to the only door and pulled it open.
